February 2003 Computer Tip

Welcome to the first tip of the year 2003. I was a bit lazy last month and didn't make one up.

A lot of people have trouble defragmenting (refer to the May tip for last year). The defrag program stops halfway or goes back to the beginning and starts again. This is because even though you have closed down programs you are using, there are still lots of programs running behind the scenes. You could do the Control Alt Delete trick ( March tip) before you start the defrag and close programs. The trouble with this is some programs still have to be running.

So, get to the point, I hear you saying!

Well, if you go into safe mode when starting up your computer, and then run defrag, that should eliminate the problem.

To go into safe mode on most computers, keep tapping the f8 key before windows starts loading. Control should also work in the same way.

Once you have finished the defrag, to get back into Normal mode, just restart your computer.

Still finding computers not adequately protected against viruses. Don’t believe the people who say that the antivirus people are just out to get your money. (Aren't most businesses?) You could end up in a real and expensive mess.
